My name is Stephen Donnan, I am a writer, LGBT rights and political activist in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
I currently write for a number of publications including Eile Magazine, Huffington Post, PunkOut and The Gay Say. I have also contributed articles for Pink News, Gay Times and the Belfast Telegraph. I am currently a Psychology & Counselling undergrad at the OU.
My political career started in 2010 when I joined the NI Green Party and established their LGBT Greens network – the forerunner to their Queer Greens committee. I left the Greens in 2012 and became a member of the Alliance Party of NI. During this time I established their Alliance LGBT wing, sat as a member of Party Executive, Treasurer and then Campaigns officer of Alliance Youth, Secretary of the East Belfast Alliance Committee and member of the Policy Committee.
In 2014 I was selected to contest the Castlereagh East DEA for the Lisburn & Castlereagh local elections, failing to win a seat but I was the first openly gay candidate to run in that area – the same area I grew up.
I left the Alliance Party in June 2015 and I am now politically independent. I founded the LoveProudly campaign in January of 2015 to campaign for equal marriage rights in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
